I H Lynn & T F Crippen

This publication describes the rock type classification used in the New Zealand Land Resource Inventory (NZLRI) since 1987. Rock types are recognised on the basis of their erosion susceptibility and physical characteristics, which are relevant to soil conservation and land use planning.

Forty-five different rock types have been recognised, on the basis of their erosion susceptibility and physical characteristics which are relevant to soil conservation and land use planning.  Each rock type is described, with examples of geological formations included in the rock types, their general distribution and typical erosion forms.
