How clean and green is New Zealand Tourism?

Murray Paterson and Garry McDonald

Landcare Research Science Series No. 24

This new report argues the case for a broader assessment of the environmental impacts of the tourism sector, by examining not only the direct effects, but also the indirect and future effects of tourism.

The authors constructed input-output economic-environmental accounts of the tourism sector, which provide a platform for lifecycle assessment (the indirect effects) and scenario analysis (future effects). In addition, existing research into the economic operation of the tourism sector is integrated with research into its use of natural resources and production of pollutants.

This report will be of interest to anyone wishing to understand the economic sustainability of the tourism sector and gain insights into its future environmental impacts.
