An illustrated account of taxa belonging to Staurodesmus, Staurastrum and nine genera of filamentous desmids. More of the desmids in this volume are planktonic, compared with those described in earlier volumes, and may be indicators of the quality of water. This final volume in the desmids series contains similar features to the previous two volumes and includes biographical notes on six distinguished desmidologists.

The Desmids series is a subset of the Flora of New Zealand series, and covers the large, well-defined group of freshwater and essentially unicellular plants, belonging to the green algae.
